I wanted to thank you for taking the time to get this
information out to the public. I also wanted to let your visitors
know of another alternative as far as detoxifying the system.
Shaklee offers a wide range of supplements, cleansing products, and
non-toxic household cleaners. None of our supplements contain
artificial ingredients. One of our newest products is a
prebiotic/probiotic system (called Optiflora) that GUARANTEES live
delivery of 500 million friendly bacteria. No other bacteria produc
t can make that guarantee. Regardless of the quality of the
bacteria when swallowed, a large amount of it is destroyed by
stomach acids, etc, on its way to the colon. Shaklee has a patented
process to encapsulate the bacteria so that it doesn't get
destroyed on its way to the colon. People are getting outstanding
results as their system is detoxified by our DTX, Herb Lax, and
Alfalfa and their immune system is strengthened by Optiflora. We
back up our products with double-blind clinical studies. Dr. Doris
Rapp recommends using Shaklee's cleaners for a non-toxic home
environment. If anyone would like more information, please contact
me at donnawkr@earthlink.net.

After leaving my last 5 jobs.. I now have a o2 machine at my
work and have gotten my career back!!!! When a co-worker comes by
and blasts me with a chemical cloud of perfume..I attach my nose
piece and flip my o2 switch. My lungs INSTANTLY relax and I stay on
it until the cloud dissapates and the colognes soak into the
people's skin. It is the ONLY thing that has worked well. Nasonex,
disability rating fighting, talking to my co-workers has not solved
my problem...this has. However, a DOCTOR must prescribe the O2 as
far as I am aware. People should be MONITORED by a Doc while on it
to check o2 amounts in the blood!! This has been the GREATEST
blessing for me.. perhaps EVER. Please feel free to write. I have
suffered for years... but now I have been given hope and my life
back. I hope this helps someone.

I read with interest your pages concerning non-toxic living. Are
you aware of Shaklee's non-toxic, biodegradable cleaners? I would
welcome the opportunity to get you information if you would like.
It would be a good addition to your list(s). Email me your address
and phone number and I can contact you--or you can call me at (909)
886-3420. The Jacques Cousteau Society uses Shaklee cleaners on
their research vessels (at least they did last I knew). Our
products break down well within the European s tandard. They do not
pollute the home or the environment. I look forward to hearing from
you. I also have a question. A friend of ours has multiple chemical
sensitivities. We want to send them a computer but the out-gassing
of the plastic casing, etc. affects her. Are you aware of any
covers, etc. that are available to help shield her from the
outgassing? We wondered about some sort of covering for the CPU,
keyboard, etc. I would appreciate any leads you could give me.
Thank you. Donna

I respect what you're doing to inform the public of the
chemicals and toxins in our foods and environment. Sadly enough it
is the foods we eat that cause sicknesses and are hastening our
demise. Eat less and detox regularly. Take Blue mountain tonics and
herbal bitters daily to accomplish this. (Visit our web-site for
info) Your body must expel waste as soon as it is produced. Cells
must not be given the opportunity to re-absorb toxins and fecal
waste, infested with parasites. Herein lies the root cause of
dis-eases. Only live foods can promote life dead foods
cannot.

Dear Jacki, I am a Deacon with Faith Baptist Chruch in Waseca,
MN. We have three members who have MCS. I am one of them. You WEB
page has been a great help to all three of us during the last year.
One thing me are still having a great deal of difficulty with is
the environment at Church. Our pastor is finally coming to
understand that we are not being demon oppressed, but the
environment is such that we need to choose between going to church
and living the rest of our lives. After attending church it takes
us from 5 to 30 days to get back to normal again, depending on what
we have been exposed to. We have a fragence free policy, which is
not supported very well by the membership. If you or anyone reading
this, could help with information in this area or workable
solutions, it would be greatly apprecated. May God continue to
bless this ministry, Merlin E. Williams

For some reason, I made a hash out of my guestbook entry. It's
an editorial nightmare - plus it looks damn silly. Yes, I meant
'chemical' when I typed 'cemical'. Sorry about that - but I do hope
people will look into the possibility that earth moving activity
near where they live could make airbourne mould a real health
hazzard. It isn't the usual garden variety stuff; this mould has
lain dormant for hundreds...possibly thousands of years. Our immune
systems aren't equipped to deal with it. Please co ntact your local
environmental watchdog group for any information they might have on
this subject - and if they don't know what you're talking about,
motivate them to learn through lots and lots of phone inqueries.
Keep up the great work on this web site - many thanks.
Shari <Uprslbovia@aol.com>
Laguna Hills, CA USA - Sunday, June 18, 2000 at 08:34:42 (GMT)
This is an enlightening site...now I have more clues as to what
might be going on with my health - or lack threof! After ploughing
through a year's worth of your guestbook comments, I noticed the
absence of a particular eco-hazzard, one which people living in
areas of ongoing relentless development might be unaware of. When
the topsoil is removed and tons of earth are displaced, moulds and
other microbes which normally lie dormant under the soil, get
released into the air. I suspect this is why I am reacting so badly
to everything else this year...from feathers to cemical
this-n-thats in all that we touch, eat and breath...this year is
definitely 'The Worst'. I've been disabled with constant headaches,
muscle pains, severe sinusitis, and a loss of physical energy that
borders on collapse. I am in my forties, so it isn't impossible
that menopause might be playing a contributing role in all this
too. But I think it much more likely that our constant
companions...environmental toxins...cause the overall debilitating
effect on our bodies and processes, rather than laying most of the
blame on 'the Change'...it gets enough bad press already. Again, a
cautionary note to those who live near lots of heavy, ongoing
landmoving and construction - check the mould counts for your area
and contact - pester - your nearest environmental watchdog group. I
hope this will be helpful. If, like me, you are in the
Irvine/Laguna Hills area of South Orange County - this is
definitely worth investigating!

Hi, Thank you for all the information. My wife, Jean, and I
teach health seminars...eating from God's plan to stay well or to
get well. I was not really aware of multiple chemical sensitivities
but am looking forward to studying from your extensive collection
of information. I am sure it will be a future presentation in our
"Foundations For Health" series. Your hard work will certainly make
getting up to speed on this subject much easier. We are both 54
years old and became Christians nine years ago. Before that we were
also mired in religion as members of the Episcopal church...steeped
in similar traditions as Catholocism. Praise the Lord for his
saving grace, pulling us out of the darkness and leading us into
His marvelous light. So we can appreciate as you both can being
surrounded by the trappings of Christianity but blinded from the
truth. My daughter has recently begun a career developing web sites

My wife, Jill and I just got our judge's ruling in our carpet
case regarding the carpet company's attempt to have our case
dismissed based on Daubert criteria. This was a critical juncture,
but the judge ruled that we should have our day in court! He did
rule that MCS as a condition is not admissable, however he made the
significant finding that this does not rule out individual symptoms
from being considered to be possibly causally related to our
exposure to our carpeting. We feel that this ruling is significant,
and so we have scanned in the entire document and would be happy to
send it to you. Please feel free to share it with anyone who might
benefit from it. It is now a matter of public record. If you would

have to admit...i'm sure we look and sound bizare , but to the

I thank God you put this site together. Four months ago my
little girl was diagnosed with Tourettes. It was not til recently,
after gobs of surfing and research, that I found your site and the
latitudes site. I began journaling my daughters vocal tics and what
she was in contact with when they were at their worst. bright green
watermelon gum, my husband's deoderant, strawberries (I believe may
have been the pesticide), Barbie toothpaste, small bottle of
perfume. After thinking for months that there was nothing I could
do to help her, I am so relieved to know maybe I can! I believe her
sensitivity to chemicals, parfumes, and dyes, may be causing her to
have tics. Shame on neurologists for not sharing this info with
parents and kids in agony!!! I will have her tested for
environmental allergies as suggested by Doris Rapp and Dr. Robbins.
I believe the Lord sent you as the answer to my prayers. I commit
myself to spreading the info on your site so I might help others
with "tourettes". GOD BLESS Y OU

What a well organized web site especially appreciated by
dizzy-headed MCS sufferers like myself. I have had MCS ever since I
can remember. I am 41 years old and the more I think about my
exposures to chemicals in my past, the more incidents I can blame
for my long term exposures. The landscaping jobs, floral designer
jobs, office jobs, interior plantscaping, restaurants, retail
clothing, all just loaded with wonderful chemicals that have
invaded my body throughout the years and settled in for a long
winter's nap. I applied for disability from the SSA in 1998 and
after two long years of not working, I was awarded my benefits. I
spent 16 years raising my two daughters on my own and probably held
25 jobs. I kept finding great jobs full of training,
responsibility, and advancement and meant to keep every job and my
employer's were very pleased with my enthusiasm and performance.
Due to printing inks, perfume, spray paint, cigarette smoke,
pesticides, deodorizers, improper ventilation, etc., I was fo rced
to end each job either from absenteeism, lack of coworker's
empathy, or my refusal to endure the 24-7 migraines I was
suffering. I had been conditioned to endure the numbing pain on the
job, but having to throw up from the pain every 20 minutes made it
impossible to function at any business. When my girls were 12 and
14, I was not able to function with the simple everyday tasks much
less a job so I relenquished custody of them to their father. The
subsequent two nervous breakdowns I suffered gave m e my last
plunge into despair and hopelessness. All who I was or tried to be
was no longer a posssibilty. My sister read an article on MCS
during this time and and "eureka", they were talking about me! I
have been making every effort to detoxify my world. I took my SSA
settlement and moved to a small coastal town that I grew up in. I
watch my foods, have an air filter, drink lots of water and stay
away from every harmful chemical be it in my food water or air, and
try to aerobic exercise when I feel g ood and walking when I don't.
Oxygen is very important in stimulating your body to function
properly. Since I don't work, I volunteer when I can. Behind the
lines volunteering is the best because it usually does not involve
public exposure and you can do things at your own speed and
capability. The reward is that contributed positively to your
environment, which helps self image and restores control in your
life. Find a good doctor, get counselling to help you adjust, and
get on a schedule. Stick to t hat schedule as if nothing else
matters, and keep those toxins at bay including the people in your
life that are toxic to your recovery and regaining control of your
life. As for everlasting life, look to the Lord Jehovah and take in
knowledge of Him, and look to Him only for your life's blessings.
If you operate your life looking to His instruction everything else
will be rewarded ten-fold. This is essential for full recovery from
this sick world we live in. Read the Bible for news of a
soon-coming e arth paradise that we will all have a chance to live
in forever. That's forever, babies. This will all be but a whisper,
my friends. No suffering, crying, dying, or dispair. Every day we
will feel happy and joyful and healthy, I can't wait to have a good
day! Anybody that wants to E-mail me feel free, I want to help if I
can.Don't give up, YOU ARE WORTH IT!!!

I am a devoted Christian and am going to school to a nutrition
consultant using a holistic approach. Chemical sensitivities is
among the many health issues I am being trained in to help others.
It is so encouraging to know there are other Christians out there
who are seeking alternative forms of health care! Keep up the great
work...for His glory alone!!!

I have had MCS since 1988. I was very fortunate in the beginning
because, unlike many others, I had very good doctors. If they
didn't know they didn't stop until they found out. I had been
homebound and on SSDI since 1990. My doctor was able to find me a
portable air filter system that I wear around my waist so I could
at least get out. I look like a space man but i've gotten used to
it. I just got a PC last week and I have been thrilled by all it
has opened up for me. As most of you know, life with M CS can get
very lonely. God Bless you for being there. I am not so
alone.

Finding a site like this one really convinced me more there is a
lot of valuable info. to learn about Toxic Chemicals and their
relation to our health concerns. Well I started using NON-TOXIC,
environment -friendly household cleaners just over four ago, and
found out there is nothing in the market place that is comparable
to what I use....and best of all, the cleaners are available world
wide. I hope I have shed some light that there are excellent
products out there and anyone can purchase them and e njoy better

After two years of visiting one specialist after another I was
finally diagnosed with "allergic dermatitis" caused by a severe
sensitivity to fragrance. I have always suffered from many
allergies, but had never had such bizzare symptoms. I left the
doctor's office with some handouts on how to avoid fragrance in my
personal care products and a prescription for Claritin. It took
another year to - thru trial and error- eliminate as much fragrance
as I could from my household. I bath myself and my daugh ter in
specially ordered fragrance-free products. I make my own household
cleaners. I have sought out and found a frangrance-free alternative
to as many products as possible. As I said, I did all of this on my
own without any useful guidance from the medical community. I found
that it was not so much that they did not want to help me, just
that they had absolutely no idea how to answer my questions about
household cleaners, shampoos, sunscreens, etc. I desperately wanted
to find someone who had this s ame type of allegy. Finding your
site was a God-send. Although my symptoms are not nearly as severe
as others I have read about on your website, it comforts me to know
that I am not the medical abnormality I was beginning to believe I
was. The information on your website is just what I have been
praying for. I have found the information on Neutralizing Therapy
particulary interesting since I have recently developed
complications with the oral allergy medicines I have been
prescribed to suppress my all ergic reactions. Thank you so very
much for creating this website.

Jennifer Ross of Germany reminds me of myself about 30 years ago
when my dear Dad asked me to refrain from smoking in his presence.
He said the cigarette smoke made his eyes burn. Now I had never
heard of a thing like THAT before! It seemed to me that he just
wanted to impose his will on me. Alot of people smoked. The
government didn't seem to think that it was a problem. (This was
years before the warnings were put on cigarettes by the surgeon
general.)As I think back on that scene with my Dad, I don't recall
what I did, except be irritated at him. It makes me sad, now many
years later because I know now that his suffering was real.
Needless to say the government finally woke up to the hazards of
cigarette smoke also. And so it goes, with all the chemical
pollution that surrounds us, perfumes being only one part of it.
When will the government see? When will people believe us?

I do not know what that lemon scented smell is but it had
poisoned me too a few times over the last coule of years. I
recommend that Mary G asks someone else to use very hot water and
vinegar to wash the furniture, then leave the window open to off
gas the sulphur in the vinegar. One application should be enough,
but if it still smells another washing should make it safe..
Priscilla's bed is another story: fabrics hold products based on
petrochemicals for ages. I am afraid that an ozone machine is not
suitable, an air cleaner with a filter for organic solvents [and NO
fragrance crystals] would help more. I think that the best thing to
do would be to ask someone to remove the materials from the bed
base and wash them in washing soda, then give them time on a
washing line to off gas before replacing them.

In response to Mary G.'s question about removing lemon scented
polish from a large piece of furniture...I would suggest that you
first get it out of your living quarters so you don't get sicker.
Do you have a garage or a storage unit? Then an ozone machine will
probably reduce the odor. This was the case with a used bed that I
tried to get perfume/fabric softener odors out of. It helped.(I
have a source for a good ozone machine, if you are interested.) But
I never could make the bed tolerable. An d what happened is that I
got more sensitized trying to keep the bed in the house. I found
that even when it was in the opposite end of the house from my
bedroom, the chemicals (even when I could not smell them)
circulated throughout the house and I started reacting. Sometimes
it took a few days or a week. I finally had to go with what an EI
friend had told me...you CANNOT get perfume odors/chemicals out of
stuff. I know that this is not what you wanted to hear. But this
was my experience. Good Luck to you. Priscilla, Arkansas

Dear Jacki, I just discovered your website and I commend you on
the wonderful job! I want to comment on your story, where you
express the desire to get a 100% organic cotton mattress. USE
CAUTION! PROCEED WITH CARE! In the course of 13 months attempting
to acquire what I hoped would be a safer bed for me...an MCS
sufferer...I may have made myself sicker. Fortunately, I never went
the $1000 +/- to buy an organic mattress, so I haven't gone broke
yet. Janices sent me a $35 pillow made of the stuff they stuff thei
r mattresses with as a test. I couldn't tolerate it. Which means
that my husband can't use it either, because it will be too close
to my nose. I know people who find organic cotton to be too
odorous, including myself with a sauna cover from Safe Reading Box
Co...who make portable saunas. But the organic cotton cover was
toxic for me...I became sensitized to it after about 6 weeks trying
to ignore the odor (organic is supposed to be better, right?). When
I first went to Dr Rea's in Dallas, the doctors asked me if I was
able to sleep. I had NO IDEA how lucky I was when I said "Yes." Two
years later my answer is "Sometimes". In other ways I seem to be
more tolerant of many different situations and seem to function
almost like a normal person. But for now, I wanted to advise strict
caution in replacing a bed that you are able to sleep on and wake
up rested in the morning. Til later, Priscilla

WOW, what a wonderful site. I've been fighting sinus and other

mulitple symptoms and doctors finally said it's all emotional, but
I've never been convienced of that. I'm on several meds for
emotional problems as they can't find anything wrong to explain
symptoms. I could relate to one part of this site about having to
hold your breath when walking down laundry asile in grocery store,
that's me. I have a small business and I get sick when someone
walks in my office with perfume on. I also hold my breath when
walking in post office hear in town. I will not walk into the local

Have read this site multiple times now since finding out I have
MCS. My symptoms are mostly burning nose/mouth and body at this
point and I hope do not get into the other problems that others
seem to suffer. I am changing mostly everything in my house to be
non-fragrant and w/o any petro chemicals. I find so far that the
cost to do this is has not been too bad. I am a mother of 2 young
children and I pray that they never come down w/this problem and
that I can help make their lives better. I have always been very
sensitive to many things like perfume, smoke, gasoline and cleaning
supplies. I have never been a big perfume wearer and always cleaned
my house w/o using gloves. I have had my carpets cleaned and
scotchguarded and used many fruit scented candles in the last year.
I wonder how much of this has contributed to my problem. Reading
this site helps me that there are others out there but, I still
have to wonder if at such a young age w/young children how to get
by day to day w/o being able to run here and there to do all the
things a mother needs to do. When I worked full time I had problems
- annoyance basically - w/smells in the workplace. Fortunately, 1
1/2 years ago I was able to quite and stay home w/my children.
Since then, I am worse. This also makes me wonder what is going on.
Hoping to make my way thru this problem in the best way by changing
how and what I do and lots of hopes and prayers. I am seeing an
environmental doctor and taking lots of Vit c and other nutrients.
Is there anyone out there that has also done this and seen
improvement - maybe if no dissappearance of symptoms at least
greatly lessing of symptoms? Have also heard of NAET but wonder if
anyone has done it and it has truly worked. Interested in
corresponding w/anyone regarding MCS and these issues.

I saw your website address in our e-mail, and logged on. Members
of my husband's family (his father, brother, and himself) have all
suffered from mild Tourette's, so was curious. I particularly
noticed your Christian faith,as we also love our mutual Lord Jesus
very much. My husband and I have been Christians for many years. I
am a "striver", so very much enjoyed your testimony about the bug
letting go. Yes, it is true. Seems we need to be worn down in order
to "let go", only to discover that God is indeed in control, and
only has our good in mind. Then, that indeed is true, "that God
causes all things to work together for good, to those who love
God,to those who have been called according to His purpose." And,
that the working together for good, for us, His creatures, does not
mean that the 'causing' is good, but the result, which causes us to
turn to Him in a deep way is "working together for good" Thank you
for your dear testimony. May I share one of mine? It is in the same
vein as yours. On PBS, (Channel 2 - Edu., Program on Nature), I was
watching a pride of lions approaching, and singling out from the
herd, a baby antelope. The narrator said of this particular
antelope, that whenever an attack like this takes place, that the
herd goes back to chase away the predator/s with their long horns,
and then forms a wall surrounding the one, i.e. baby being
attacked, and becomes a fortress or buttress protecting that one.
It was such a vivid picture to me of the Body of Christ in such a
practical way! This is how our Jesus cares for us. I was reminded
of that verse in Ephesians 6:10, ll: "Finally, be empowered in the
Lord and in the might of His strength. V.ll: "Put on the whole
armor of God that you may be able to stand against the stratagems
of the devil,". There is an accompanying footnote, which is also
encouraging. I'll just quote a bit of it. "the church (brothers and
sisters, not a building)is seen here as a warrior for the defeating
of God's enemy, the devil. To defeat God's enemy, we need to put on
the whole armor of God. "Put on" is an imperative, a command. God
has provided the armor for us, but He does not put it on for us.
Rather, we ourselves must put it on, exercising our will to
cooperate with Him." "The church is a corporate warrior, and the
believers are parts of this unique warrior. We must fight the
spiritual warfare in the Body." Anyway, it seems I have found
someone who appreciates the lessons learned in nature also. I have
always loved and enjoyed the beauty of God's wonderful creation,
and am learning to appreciate His creatures in so many other ways
also, i.e. us. We have so many frailties, and yet, there is the
"treasure" IN the "earthen vessel". Thank you again for sharing the
story of the little bug. E-mail is a wonderful way to share so many
things. In His keeping grace, Joan Mauzy PS. Have been married to
my husband for 27 years, 4 children; Michael, 25 years, Rebecca 24

very low energy level, I have food allergies, but lately I have

Appreciate your site immensely. Always had sensitivity to
perfumes and chemicals, but after moving to Florida 3 yrs ago its
gotten much worse. I get a symptom I can't find in any literature,
as well as the usual ones such as fatigue etc. It consists of rapid
development of upper GI gas and associated pains and discomfort
when exposed to the smells of pesticides and chemicals in air here.
People treat their lawns, grounds and homes constantly for insects
and weeds. The air reeks of these odors all year long. My home was
a refuge at the beginning but now with me getting more sensitive
and the house getting more infiltrated with the chemicals of
everyday living, it is less satisfactory even in the house. I am
more sensitive than others, no doubt, but when I perused your site
I realized that others suffer even more than I and felt fortunate.
The most sickening aspect of this all, is that the medical
profession has done very little to understand this problem. Most
often, a person presenting with environmental illnesses is viewed
by a physician as psychosomatic or they will try unneeded drugs or
tests that have no effect in solving environmentally caused
problems, and possibly do more damage to a weakened system. Like
medical education, that provides virtually no emphasis on
nutrition, they also forget about the chemical-laden environment we
are forced to live in.

This web site is wonderfully informative and has been quite
helpful. I get migraines (35 years) when I am exposed to perfumed
products, even candles and potpourri, and only Imitrex (for
migraines) will take the headache away. Is there anything an
allergist can do for me? I have read the web sites and it looks
like there might be some hope. CAN an allergist give me shots to
stop my sensitivity to perfumed products? I have been told that
they cannot help problems caused by environmental odors. Does
anyone know?

I think we'd be foolish to think there is no relation between
the increased toxins/chemicals and the increase in illnesses. While
continued and further study is needed, we do need to think about
what we are doing to our bodies, and our enviroment. Believe me,
I'm NOT GREEN...but I sure seem to be thinking more along those
lines. Education is the key - NOT name calling. Everyone needs to

treated by Dr. Rae in Dallas. Two things have helped me: 1. By
using magnets I have finally gotten to walking fairly normal. 2.
The formula Cell Forte with IP-6, Enzymatic Therapy, Green Bay, Wi.
has helped me tolerate food again. I have developed fatty tumors in
my gut and nothing else has helped. The dosage was four capsules
daily. I couldn't tolerate this, and after a bleeding from my
stomache, I cut down to a half capsule twice a day. Now I am up to
one or two capsules. Note: Do not use magnets if you are wearing
any kind of electrical aid such as a pace maker. At first when I
used full doseage of IP6, I had enternal bleeding from probably a
pouch in the gut. You should talk it over with your physican before
using any treatment)

Just a thought on the latest entry concerning mercury filling
extraction. I have known many people who have had their fillings
removed only to react adversly to all replacement materials. They
are generally toothless or nearly so. Also, the pain from the
procedures can be too much for very sensitive people, especially
those who are extremely ill. One young lady I knew ended up
committing suicide after her fillings were removed by one of the EI
dentists. I can tolerate no dental materials well, and have months
of pain from the least toxic filling material. It is something I
just have to weather through, I only wish my friend could have
stuck it out. Please be careful and use your best judgement prior
to jumping on the amalgum removal bandwagen; it does not work for
everyone. Actually I do not know any very sensitive person that it
has really been a success or helped their health at all.

David Doi,DDS on the Big Island has been trained by the Huggins

a book called "It's All In Your Head". In the back of his book one

Springs. The blood test was used by my Dentist to determine which
dental materials where not toxic to my system. In Dr. Doi's office

regarding purchasing an air filter, from a dental lab
technician....interesting. "We went to Home Depot to purchase ours.
Since each room in our lab has one I find I can breathe easier but
what is interesting is what made us buy them in the first place.
One of our technicians started breaking out in hive like welts only
on her legs, only after she arrived at work and only on the portion
of her leg that was exposed. If she wore shorts they went all the
way up her leg, if she wore jeans with no socks then only her
ankles. We tried vacuuming, scrubbing her work station, changing
her work station but it did no good. Her hands/arms/face did not
break out (which I thought was odd). The first day we used the
filters she did not get the hives and hasn't since."

, let's not forget that breathing plaster dust is also
hazardous, as is breathing porcelain dust, acrylic filings and
resin dust. While we are at it, the dust generated in my partial
denture department probably wouldn't help you run a faster mile,
and the stuff that sticks to your lab coat while you're polishing a
gold crown can't be all that healthy either. Let's talk about other
fumes and aerosals. Do you spray opaque? Use monomer or accelerator
on you CA cements? Beryllium is only part of the exposure you need
to think about. Do your kids ever come visit the lab and watch you
work? Your spouse or other guests? do they wear a mask while they
sit and visit? If you work at home, think about what you track into
the carpet and then later put into the air when you vacuum. Dental
laboratories generate plenty of hazardous material, usually of the
airborne type and good vacuum systems, air purifiers and masks are
as important as any other tool or equipment. And NOT just while
metal finishing.

I heard recently that some people are alergic to dentures(the
plastic?) Amongst 40 other common foods and chemicals, I am alergic
to dental wax and bee's wax.(commonly used in orthodotics...kids
braces. I personally think dentists should have to have some
knowledge of MCS. Maybe if a few of us suffering contact the
American Dental Society, Or Harvard Dental Lab, maybe there will be
some understanding and research done. Harvard encourages their
students to do research. They have a website online, by the way.
...just a thought. Everyone does not have MCS, it is up to the few
of us suffering to make out symptoms known. And hopefully educate
other..and spare them suffering. Thank you again, Jacki for your
site....you will probably save people from much unnecessary
suffering, surgery, and death. I believe food and chemical
avoidence can cure many illnesses that attack the vital organs. I
agree with the NAET theory, but not necessarily the treatment
proposed. Good luck to all suffering. Enid Rylee

I have had this problem MCS since 1991. Now my life is entirely
dictated by it.I'm a visiting nurse right now and most of the
patients I see smoke which makes me sick literally. I've asked that
I not have smokers bbut many times the person making the scedule
doesn't know who smokes and who doesn't. So I suffer. The VA
doesn't aknowledge this condition. I'm worried about where I'm
going to work when I finish the BSN. That's a whole other
nightmare. We're going to be RNs in a few months. The other 87
students have been asked repeatedly by me and by disability
services to not wera perfume on the days of class that I'm in with
them. I stood up in front of them and described the condition, gave
them printed material explaining it, the nursing instructor read a
letter to them every semester saying the same thing. There's a
student with MCS in the class, they have a reaction to all scented
products(there's a list read to them), and it asked that they
refrain from wearing these products on the day of the class. Guess
what...they still wore perfume and cologne.I told them about the
problem specifically because they will be in the healthcare field.
Let me say this. I'm an LPN right now and one of the first things I
was taught was healthcare professionals can not wear any scented
products-it makes patients who are allready nauseas sicker. My
instructors would send people who wore perfume home to shower and
made them make up the clinical time.(the student had to pay the
instructor $22.00 per hr for the makeup time) So, it took only one
person "forgetting" and wearing perfume. After everyone heard she
had to work on Sat. and pay that kind of money-nobody else ever
"forgot" and wore perfume. I have to say that the only reason
anything was said to the RN students was because of me. Even after
seeing me flee from the toxic environment of the classroom
vomiting-a nursing instuctor continued wearing perfume. She finally
got it when we were in a small seminar group and I started dry
heaving because of her perfume. Now she's a perfume free
crusader-she tells everybody they shouldn't be wearing it. Of
course, they still do. I know because I have to hold my breath to
walk by them in the quad. In clinical, I had to avoid certain areas
that the other students were in because they still were wearing
perfume. It's not just the perfume. They put new rugs in the
building where all of the nursing classes are. I couldn't even walk
in the door without getting a migraine headache. Now if I get behind
a diesel truck I get sick. If I get behhind a car with a smoker, I
get sick. Oh and I love this one. My best friend who is a nursing
student also and is extremely understanding about this problem,
gave me a christmas present. It's a cd cabinet with pretty flowers
and hummingbirds painted on it. Guess what, it made me sick. I'm
typing this using one eye because I now have a migraine and the
light makes it worse. This is ridiculous.I have to clean my house
with vinegar because everything else makes me sick. I can't do the
laudry for two reasons-we have oil heat and the fumes of the burner
makes me violently ill, and the detergents make me sick. Numerous
doctors told me I was in so many words crazy. 3 told me I had
vasomotor rhinitis and that I may have environmental triggers for
the migraines. MAY HAVE? The Dr. who finally diagnosed MCS
said-they give that diagnosis when they don't know what the hell's
wrong with you.Interesting. His son also had that diagnosis and I
gathered that he didn't agree with it. Anyway, I'm becoming more
and more of a recluse. People just don't understand. With the
billion dollar scent industry convincing everyone they must smell
like an artificial raspberry to be desireable-people with this
problem aren't going to make a dent in public opinion. I have a
request, though. Next time you see someone in healthcare for a
doctor's appt. or whatever...and you smell the
nurse,CNA,HHA,NP,PA,DR,or PCA you tell them that they should not be
wearing it and you just wanted them to be aware that it makes some
people sick. You never know who it affects, so you shouldn't ever
put it on.This was in one of my nursing books-that I don't have any
more.Just one more aside. Most hospitals or healthcare agencies
have a policy regarding wearing scented products. Maybe what it
will take to make people aware is to complain. In my last two
clinical rotations I explained to the nurse I went out with that I
had this probblem. One in a schhool nursing position and one in the
visiting nurse association. Both continued to wear perfume, even
after seeing me get sick. The next day, they both told me the same
thing. They both were employed by the VNA. They told me that the
VNA had a strict policy against the wearing of any scented
products. My question is, then why did they keep wearing them?
Especially after seeing what it does to me. I just don't get it.

Dear Jacki & Gorden and other surfers - first of all a happy

have introduced me to a couple of very nice people. I just wanted
to ask if anyone knows or has experience of Kiehls products which

I don't discount EVERYTHING I read in the glossies because after
all that was how I got to know about Aveda and I am a devoted fan
of their 'sensitive' range. I got a Kiehls shampoo and notice that
it doesn't contain this Lauryl/Laureth ? Sulfate that people go on
about. If any one has any info I would be interested to hear. Sadly
2 companies which might have had suitable products are not
available here (kiss my face and aubrey organics) and after my
disastrous first attempt will not be making any more - sorry
attempting anymore - internet purchases. Kiehls have just started
being sold here in a couple of the more 'posh' shops so would be
interested to hear of experiences. Very best wishes to all -

I found your pages while looking for some fragrance free
products. Your brochure is so well written. I plan on ordering some
soon. I sent the link to another unscented friend. I really
understand illness. I've had bad allergies all my life. I now have
three neighbors that use heavily scented fabric softeners that keep
me in doors when they are doing laundry. I occasionally receive a
magazine that has touched one with a perfume ad somewhere in rout
which ruins it for me. I can't sit with a large group of people
either such as the church sanctuary.

Hopefully, I'll be able to do more in 2000.) I'd recently been

me to refocus. Thank you so very much. In Him!

I read your story after my husband called me from work and told
me he had run across it. He seemed convinced that it was something
I should consider since my symptoms are practically the same and
even moreso. I still haven't had a diagnosis and have just about
given up. I think that everyone who knows what I have described for
years (and with those years - increased symptoms)thinks that I am
overly concerned about my physical health and maybe there isn't
anything wrong at all. Your story with interesting because it
contained some of the symptoms that were missing with other similar
diseases (i.e. lupus, rhuematoid arthritis, lymes, fibromyalgia,
etc.)I feel I fit into every category yet still no answers. Thanks
for your article... maybe I am a step closer to finding out!

update on dental wax...apparently my alergy is due to something
inherant to the actual wax itself. Did an analysis and discovered I
am alergic to natural bees' wax, so some hidden ingredient in the
dental/orthodontics wax was not the culprit. (not a big surprize,
because I am alergic to honey as well...and over 50 other common
foods due to MCS) Go figure that one. But none-the-less, avoiding
all triggers I stay well so wanted to share with others of you
suffering... Warning: SUSPECT....well...EVERYTHING! Thats the only
way to weed out the bad and get well. When you regain your health
due to proper elimination it is well worth it. Good Health is
always the better trade off. ....holding my breath at the gas

Jacki, You're site is helping so many people. We must help
ourselves with elimination first. Thank you for sharing what you
know with fellow mcs sufferers. Every little bit helps. I am going
to share two unsuspected products I reacted to. I am a young
healthy person as long as I avoid the triggers that offend me.
Recently my ankles bloated up for 3 days due to a deoderant on the
market. Starts with an M..but don't want to name names. Please
analyze if the same happens to you post-usage. Also, for others
with braces and using dental wax BEWARE. I get a very sick
reaction. Possible ingredient "alum" which is aluminum potassium
sulfate. Children wearing braces should be warned of a potential
alergic reaction. Who would ever suspect dental wax?! This mcs has
a surprize around every corner doesn't it. Stay Well. Enid

This is an excellent site. It has more understandable
information than on it/links from it than any other I have
encountered. I am needing information to try to get our L.R. Master
Chorale to become officially and absolutely perfume-free (how can
you spin out that beautiful tone when a passing wave of air makes
you gag or cough audibly into that sensitive musical phrase?)
Another choir member had a respiratory seizing-up during another
concert. It just isn't right that the few persistant killer choir
members can sabotage the performance which all have worked
toward--or can send a fellow singer to the hospital. Thank you for
this immensely useful information.

It's nice to find a web site on natural living that is Christian
based and not New Age. After all, it was God's plan to begin with.
We try and live as natural as possible and have recently begun
making our own soap. It's totally natural with no added fragrances.
I could never use store bought soaps, the scent gives me a
headache. For those who need all natural, gentle skin cleansers
handmade soap is the best. There are many people who make and sell
it (including us, we're Soap Wagon) and it is easy to make, look
for books at your library.

Greetings in Christ Jesus Thank you for your web site. Fourteen
years ago I was told that I suffered from MCS. It has been a battle
because most of the people I live around just do not understand
what it is I suffer. Yet I went through all the testing, allergy
shots, trying to clean up my environment and going on supplements.
The supplements and additional health additives amounted to a
stagering $200 a month. On one income we came close to banckupcy.
It cost to live better. Some say well it's better than living sick.
Well praise the Lord our God has a better alternative. After 12
years of doing it the way Doctors suggested and going broke I fell
before my knees to God. He knows just what we are going through. It
has only been by faith in Him that I am able to go shopping for our
"needs". We live in a poluted world. Even the computers (we can not
seem to live without) give off toxic fumes. We can not avoid
polution all together. There is a verse in the Bible that tell us
we will be exposed to poisen and not be harmed. We must do what the
Bible does speak of. There is a verse that said we are not to mix
fabric (cotton/& whatever). I just do not know where these
verses are off hand, if you are interested look them up for
yourself. God does intend for us to live as close to pure in
spirit, soul and body as we can. We Christians are partily to blame
for the environment, because we have not learned, nor taught our
children the improtance of being good stewarts of the earth. Our
God commanded us to take care of this planet. It is now up to us to
turn the tide and take the God given responsibility to clean it up.
I will not live in fear of polution for our God is greater. I know
I have a lot to learn on just what it take to clean up my corner.
So I am greatful for your information. Please pray that the others
in my home will not only understand, but help also in the clean up.
Thank you. Eileen Jennings

I've spent the last 25 years of my life (I'm 40) walking through
life as if I'm dodging a mine field. Holding my breath passing a
smoker on the street, or crossing the street to avoid them. Being
subjected to rude smokers in the car in front of me, who don't have
the decency to keep their windows rolled up so they can breath
their own toxic air, but instead hold their arm out the window as
far from their nose, throat and eyes as possible, while the filthy
stream of smoke makes a beeline to me in my car. I plan to see
movies at off times so there are less people around so I can find a
nice, cozy perfume free spot in the corner. Inevitably, with an
entire theatre empty, a stink-scented person will sit near me, and
I have to search for another space. A movie is somewhat easy, but
when one has assigned seating venue tickets - I'm stuck
"half-breathing" all night, not being able to fully enjoy. I
practice yoga and even though there is a sign posted about not
wearing any scented products, people walk in and permeate the
studio. This is really tough to "breath deep," in a pose while not
being able to take a full complete breath. Yoga is about nourishing
the organs and nervous system... hard to do under those
circumstances. I have to leave early, usually with a mild headache
and nausea. I've finally started telling these people to please
move since their scented product is making me sick. I'm going to
print out some of the articles on this web sight and post them on
the yoga studio bulletin board. I rent, and even though I have
pleaded with the landlords to tell me in advance of any
painting/repairing/spraying that they will do, they don't. Non
MCSers just don't take it seriously. In the last 10 years I've
pretty much had to shy away from public life as much as possible.
I'd rather spend my days hiking in nature, wholesome and natural,
then a nausea producing department store anyway. Speaking of
department stores, 1 hour maximum, and then I am out of there,
otherwise, I end up with a headache. As it is, after 10 minutes I
get stomach-sick. 8 years ago I asked my doctor to write me a
letter to give to my employer. It simply states that I am sensitive
to scented and or toxic products, and bright light. Exposure will
cause severe migraine headaches. This is great to have, although it
still causes unenlightened people to be annoyed, especially if they
have to make a change. I've been ridiculed so often for being "too
sensitive" it's really sad. I can smell a fire, hundreds of miles
away, when others cannot. I can smell chemicals upon immediate
exposure, while the average person doesn't. When I'm teased I tell
these ignorant people that I am actually stronger than them. While
my body will get sick from exposure, it is also an advanced warning
system. I shy away and run from toxic exposure, while the average
person is breathing this stuff in, poisoning their body and not
even knowing it. G-D did not create chemicals and I believe that
even though it is awful to have this condition, I try to stay
positive and look at it as a blessing. My intake of toxins is
limited because my body says NO! I also have "outside" clothes and
"inside" clothes. This way, any junk I've picked up from being
outside, won't be transmitted on any of my belongings indoors. I
don't wear shoes in the house.. you get the picture. Having MCS is
a lifestyle. I think the hardest part is when I'm with other
people. It's one thing to negotiate the mine field solo, but when
others are with me, they get dragged along. I now just tell my
friends, "when you are with me, my illness is your illness." I've
lost friends because of this illness. They just couldn't put down
that cigarette, or got embarrassed one to many times by my direct
and outspoken combat in dreadful situations. I can remember when
there were no "no smoking" laws and people smoked on airplanes.
Once I was seated in the last row before the "first row" of
smoking. I refused to be seated and told the flight attendent, if
they didn't want to have an ambulance pick me up in Texas, they'd
better move my seat. They didn't want to do it, but I stood my
ground, causing the plane to be delayed by 10 minutes. That is one
small sampling of what I and I'm sure the rest of us MCS sufferers
go through. Always "fighting for health." Thank you for having this
web page,it's comforting to hear other people's stories and to know
we are not alone.

Dear Jacki: Thanks for your story. It is so encouraging to know
that you are getting stronger, especially since God is your source
of strength. I am a believer also. I can relate to your story as
well. I am recovering from being poisoned by intravenous steroids
my doctor gave me because he thought I had Multiple Sclerosis. The
steroids poisoned my body and blew out my thyroid. They wanted to
give me radio-active iodine to kill my thyroid and put me on a drug
called thyroxin for the rest of my life. I now know that what I was
suffering from was an epidural gone bad during the birth delivery
of my son in June of 1998. The epidural produced a lot of
neurological dysfunction that symptoms of MS would produce. I told
the doctors that I was not going to take the radio-active iodine
and that I would heal my thyroid naturally. He just laughed and
said that my case was the worst he has ever seen and that I would
be the first to heal my thyroid. Well after 8 months my thyroid is
almost completely healed due to a number of treatments that might
help your disorder. My treatment included, acupuncture,
chiropractic, homeopathy, and "engergy work or rebalancing", and
chelation therapy. All these treatments brought me back from the
grave and radically changed my immune system. If you are interested
in understanding more about any of these treatments, e-mail me at
my husbands address and I will write back to you. In His Care,

My oldest daughter suffers from MCS, and is a patient of Dr.
Doris Rapp, Scottsdale, AZ. Dr. Rapp has published some wonderful,
informative books...("Is This Your Child's World?" and "Is This
Your Child?") My daughter's allergies have turned her world (as
well as ours) upside down. It is a very REAL problem, and it needs
to be recognized as such. People are very quick to disregard
anything they don't understand, and to label people negatively who
suffer with MCS. It is sad to think that people need to have
something like this hit home in order to accept that MCS really
does exist. It is a devastating illness....I know...I have seen it
first hand. God Bless the canary in the coal mine...it could be

Your site is fascinating. I've known now for 2 years that I
suffer from MCS but in my region it is not recognized and no one
seems to know much about the disease and even less the medical
staff in our city. Do you know any association in Canada that has
info on enviromental diseases or how can I inform the population of
the risks they are at, etc... How to get proper treatment, etc.
Thanks for your help? And again, congratulations on your site. It
is very informative and helpful. Line

QUESTION: What is the problem with jute backing in area rugs?
Debra's book says that jute is not desireable. Is it a structural
problem or a chemical/toxic problem? My wife and I need to know in
order to make an informed purchase. Thanks.

Thank you, thank you! What a comfort to know of other sufferers
and know that I am not just overreacting! If anyone out there knows
where I can turn to get excused from Jury Duty, please let me know.
My doctor will not support me in this and the last time I was
called, I became so ill around my well-scented co-jurors that I
could not even walk back to my car! Thanks again. Jocelyn

In response to knowledge of a fragrance free workplace. I know
and have heard of only one and am glad to tell about the wonderful
people who support their fellow employee. It is a non-profit
organization called the Grand Canyon Trust. There are 30+ employees
and 1 chemically sensitive person. The people I have spoken with
are very supportive and understanding. It is an environmentally
concerned group and I commend them all. I do not work for them but
wish I was able. I also wish people who are connected to the
petrochemical industry would stop interjecting their propoganda
into environmentally concerned websites. It is discusting and
hurtful. Thanks again for your wonderful website.

I just wanted to say that I'm extremely impressed both with the
amount of researched fact presented on your page and with the way
the people presenting their stories persevered in finding the true
cause of their illness. It's scary--I read your page and noticed
that I suffer from MANY of the symptoms of MCS...I shall have to do
more research. Please, keep informing people about the dangers of
perfumes...as an organic chemistry major at Bennington College, I
can tell you that I work very closely with ethanol, benzophenone-2,
and acetone, all of which can be found in perfumes by Calvin Klein,
Armani, Versace, and the Gap, to name a few. I would like to
recommend that you look into one company: Aveda. Aveda claims that
its fragrances are entirely plant-derived, are never animal tested,
and are biodegradable. See them at www.aveda.com (no, I'm not a
salesperson for Aveda, but I find that it's very easy and enjoyable
for me to use their products). Take care, and thank you! Regards,
Abby Summar

I came across this site while looking for a water treatment
system and air filtration system for my home. If anyone has
information regarding either, please E-mail me at HEOtto@aol.com.
The information this site provides only confirms my suspicions
regarding the connection between environmental conditions and
overall health. Thank You.

Please forward this message to those on your lists and address
books who might be interested in avoiding radiation hazards due to
possible y2k computer/human errors. We MUST act now -- We CAN make
a difference (through cyber-democracy!) There is power in numbers.
Go to website dedicated to y2k nuclear risks, containing back-up
information AND quick ACTIONS, w/easy-follow directions to email
petition to governors in each state, sign onto the World Atomic
Safety Holiday (WASH) petition, send emails to ALL elected
representatives in seconds, and/or world leaders. Very important to
get this out to as many as possible and as quickly as possible.

I feel for everyone and would like to say that this site is a
good one. I would also like to say that there are companies out
there that make green products (toxic free and 100% ready to return
to nature. Email me and I'd love to help you out and send you

I've suffered from MCS for a number of years, but was unable to
locate any information until I began researching fibromyalgia which
I was just diagnosed with this week. I am so happy and blessed to
finally find a source that can provide me with the necessary
information to help clean up my environment. I've been removing a
number of toxins from my home, but through your site have learned a
number of new ways to help protect myself and family from these
dangerous and deadly products. Also, I loved your reference to the
miners using canaries in the coal mines because, for years, I've
told people, "I'm your canary. You better pay attention to what's
happening to me because you're headed down this road, too." God
bless you!

I would also like to be informed if anyone knows of a fragrance
free workplace. I became super sensitive to chemicals, perfumes and
smoke after I was exposed to a toxic chemical seven years ago.

Very pleased with the information I have just read on your
website. I too faced serious health problems, but found some
products that not only cleaned the air around me, but cleaned out
the chemicals inside my body with all natural, organic supplements.
I started a detox program that changed my life in a week. I would
love to share these products with other people who need help with
their medical conditions. I praise the Lord daily for bringing
these products to my attention. I love to share them with
others!

Hi, I would just like to tell you that chlorophyll is not toxic.
Chlorophyll comes from chloroplasts, witch is what gives plants
their green colour and allows plants to carry out photosynthises.
Chlorophyll is actually good for us! I just thought I would clear
that up for everyone.

You are an answer to prayer...with wisdom from the Lord! Thanks

the Lord made it, I can receive it and pray over it with
thanksgiving. If man has monkeyed with it, watch out!"
